Curlmix: My FIRST successful Wash and Go

Background
My natural hair journey began in April 2015. I've gotten relaxers ever since I was 13 years old. Over the years, I typically got a relaxer every three or four months. Around 2013/2014, I was unsuccessful in my initial attempt to transition to natural hair after waiting six months before succumbing yet again to the relaxer life....

Fast forward to April 2015. I was due for a relaxer after four months or so and for some reason, I just could not bring myself to do it. At the time, I was living in Columbus, Ohio and was a client of Synergi Salon, a salon that specializes in natural hair. At Synergi, everyone was natural and their hair was long, shiny, thick and healthy. I wanted my hair to look like theirs! So, I decided to transition over 2+ years and was able to do so successfully with regular trims, deep conditioning weekly and braid-outs with perm rods.

In August 2017, I tried finger coils for the first time (after over 2+ of braid-outs.)  And in May 2018, out of necessity, I experienced my first successful wash and go, with the Curlmix Flax Seed Gel.

The Wash and Go Moment
I was forced to do a wash and go because I was in the Outer Banks, NC with my family and only had 20 minutes to shower and get ready for dinner after spending the afternoon at the beach.  Both of my parents immediately remarked that they loved my hair and it reminded them of what it used to look like when I was a child. Everyone including my husband seems to prefer my wash and go look to my finger coils.

So let's talk about Curlmix.

The Brand
The founders of Curlmix are a husband and wife who are based out of Chicago.  Curlmix started as a DIY subscription box and eventually, after great demand, the founders decided to create a hair care line that was ready to use. Curlmix has four products including a serum, hair butter, flax seed gel, and moisturizer. There are six different oil/fragrance combinations based on the needs of your hair and your scent preferences.

Repair: Rosehip oil (scent = rose)
Soften: Argan Oil (scent = lemon cream)
Growth: Hemp seed oil (scent = watermelon)
Moisturize: Jojoba oil (scent = lavender)
Strengthen: Castor oil (scent = vanilla)
Sensitive Skin: Sweet Almond Oil (scent = fragrance-free)

You are bound to find one or more products that work well for you. All of the products are free from parabens, silicones, sulfates, and phthalates.

My Experience
I have used the fragrance-free moisturizer and all of the flax seed gels. I was able to get great results EVERY SINGLE TIME. I also get compliments on my hair frequently when I use this product. I brought several of the sampler bottles with me to a conference and several conference attendees asked me about what products I use in my hair. :) I ordered the sampler box and was able to use a code from some of my favorite Youtubers @m.a.d.curls (CODE: MADCURLS) for 20% off.

Here are some product application tips!

1) Apply the product on soaking wet hair. (Keep clips and a spray bottle close by!)
2) Apply the product in small sections. I used at least 8-12 sections (closer to 12)
3) The gel is designed to be used alone but can be paired with the moisturizer.
4) Use a nickel or quarter-sized amount and apply to each section.
5) The gel leaves a cast that scrunches out easily once dry. (I scrunch out the crunch with a light oil.)

There are only two drawbacks with this product line. 1) Each gel is approximately $27 and the bottles are 8oz. I typically only get four, max five uses out of each bottle. 2) I have only been able to get 1-2 days out of my wash and go with this line. I would prefer to get 3-5 days.

But when I want a wash and go that is guaranteed to be fluffy, shiny, and defined, Curlmix always delivers.

Do I have a favorite oil/fragrance combo?
This is so hard. Every time I try to choose a favorite I change my mind. I really love the lavender, lemon cream and rose scents. I was able to get great results irrespective of which oil/fragrance combo I used. If I absolutely must choose, my favorite product, I would choose the lavender flax seed gel (purple packaging). I do prefer to use the fragrance-free moisturizer with the gel though.

Curious about this line? Try the sampler box! May the wash and go gods be with you...

  2. Amazing curls with this wash-n-go! I’ve been natural since 2013 and I understand the struggle in finding good products for a wash and go that won’t weigh down, dry out or leave my hair oily. I believe I’ve found it in CurlMix! The first time I tried just the flaxseed gel, my wash and go lasted 3 days (if memory serves me correctly). I did another wash and go yesterday with the softening moisturizer and flaxseed gel. ❤️
