Henna Sooq Product Review: Ayurvedic Scalp + Root Hair Mask

Many of you may have heard about ayurveda. Ayurveda has been around for centuries, but has become increasingly popular in the hair care industry in recent months. Ayurvedic herbs can be used to strengthen, moisturize, and grow your hair. As a general matter, ayruvedic ingredients tend to be quite strengthening.

I first learned about using ayurvedic ingredients for hair growth through a well-known naturalista, Farida, otherwise known as @curlyproverbz. On her YouTube channel, she posts extensively about how various ayurvedic ingredents helped her retain length, grow her hair, and maintain moisture over the years. Farida credits much of her hair growth to using high-quality ingredients from none other than Henna Sooq. 

HennaSooq is a black-owned brand that is based in Maryland. The founder, Khadija, is extremely kind, welcoming, energetic and knowledgeable. She sources all of her ingredients from India including henna powders, amla oil, camellia oil, and various ayurvedic powders like aloe vera, amla, cassia and brahmi. Because ayurvedic ingredients generally strengthen the hair, it is important to use them in the right combination so that your hair is balanced. If you are newer to ayurveda, you are in luck because Henna Sooq has pre-mixed masks that you can utilize. The mask that I am featuring today is the Ayruveda Scalp + Root Hair Mask.  

This mask is comprised of 5 ayurvedic herbs (cassia, neem, brahmi, aloe vera and bhringraj) and 3 essential oils (euclalyptus, lemon and rosemary). (Thanks to Khadija for taking the guesswork out of the picture for us and creating tremendous ease!) These ingredients help to stimulate hair growth and strengthen your hair strands. The texture of this mask is sort of runny, kind of like a milkshake that has been sitting for a little while. The color of the mask is a deep olive green and the scent is "earthy." 

Directions

When you receive this pre-mixed hair mask, put it in your freezer immediately. When you are ready to use it, take it out and let it thaw for 1-2 hours before you apply it to your hair and scalp. Apply it on freshly washed hair in sections. (I recommend detangling your hair beforehand and apply it using the praying hands method.) Let is sit for 1-2 hours before co-washing with one of Henna Sooq's three Cleansing Conditioners (or your favorite co-wash). I use the Rosemary, Tangerine and Clary Sage Cowash from Henna Sooq. 

Tips

1) Wear a t-shirt that you do not care about and cover relevant surfaces. This hair mask can get a bit messy. 

2) Detangle your hair before you apply the mask. You won't really be able to finger-detangle or detangle you hair with a brush or comb once this mask is applied.

3) If your hair is sensitive to strengthening treatments, consider following up with a moisturizing treatment for 10-30 minutes. I have permanent hair color and have had color corrections done within the past year. So, I always opt to follow-up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. 

4) Use these strengthening treatments once every 2-4 weeks. 

5) Be prepared to co-wash your hair at least 3x to remove all of the product from your hair. (For real, you cannot just use water to remove this treatment. This treatment goes "hard in da paint" in terms of its strengthening properties. 🙂

Would I re-purchase this product? Yes. The pre-mixed masks from Henna Sooq are a real treat. I enjoy using them 1-2x a month. Also, my hair has grown significantly since I began incorporating ayurvedic ingredients into my routine. (The gray roots never lie!) :) Once more of the powders like amla, aloe vera, and brahmi are re-stocked, I will likely purchase those to add to my deep conditioners. But, I always plan to have a couple of these pre-made mixtures in my freezer.
