Opulent Hair Essentials Review
In college I had a friend named Daniel who would often say "look at your life and look at your choices." Whenever he would say it, we would cackle laughing and never before did I imagine the phrase pertained to me. Well, in January 2020, I think that phrase applies to me because I waited ENTIRELY TOO LONG to try Opulent Hair Essentials ("OHE"). OHE is a vegan, handmade, black-owned brand based in Texas. I've had the products sitting in my fridge and when I used them recently, I was instantly humbled. I should have been using these products a longgggggg time ago. Hopefully this review will do the brand justice. Here is a link to my YouTube video featuring the same products included in this blog post. (Also, shout-out to my Instagram friend Julie for telling me about this brand.)
This brand is filled with safe, clean and ayurvedic ingredients. So if you don't want to mix X ayurvedic powder with Z deep conditioner, you can use the two deep conditioners from Opulent Hair Essentials that are filled with ingredients to keep your hair moisturized, strong, and to assist with hair growth. Let's dive in to the review.
No Tress-Passing Cleansing Shampoo
Ingredients: Hydrosol Water, Lauryl Glucocide, Oat protein, Avocado oil, Panthenol DL, Hibiscus Extract, Burdock Root, Nettle Leaf Extract, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Propanediol and Essential Oils: Lemon, Rosemary, Peppermint
If you are someone who struggles with product build-up or an itchy scalp, you very well may enjoy this shampoo. It has a nozzle which is also helpful for folks with protective styles who need to cleanse their hair and scalp. The texture of this shampoo is runny and it has a clarifying effect that reminds me of the Ecoslay Cleanser.
Do I recommend this product? Yes if you are looking for a clarifying shampoo.
Will I re-purchase this product? Probably not as I am relatively content with the cleansers I use regularly.
Oil for Your Turmoil Growth Serum
Ingredients: Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Clary Sage, Mustard Oil, Neem , Bhringraj, Moringa, Nettle, Grapeseed Oil, Black Cumin Oil, Tea tree Oil, Rosemary, Peppermint, Horsetail Root, Lemon, and Lavender and Sweet Orange Scented Oil
This 2oz hair growth oil helps with various scalp-related issues including but not limited to contact dermititis, eczema, alopecia, postpartum shedding and scalp psoriasis. SIGN ME UP! This oil can also help with thinning edges and slow the process of hair shedding. In addition, it can stimulate hair growth and reduce breakage. The oil includes ingredients like black cumin seed, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, lemon oil, sweet orange oil and carrier oils like avocado, jojoba and olive oil. If you don't have the time or desire to make DIY hair growth oils, this is a wonderful option for you.
Do I recommend this oil? Yes.
Will I re-purchase this oil? Yes. I use it in the evenings for my scalp massages. This product made my product favorites list in 2020.
Hit the Brakes on the Break Deep Conditioner
Ingredients: Distilled Water, Fermented Rice Water, Brassicyl Isoleucinate Esylate, Chebe, Fenugreek, Cassia, Brahmi, Amla, Saw Palmetto, Burdock Root, Yucca Root, Hydrolyzed Hemp, Sage, Slippery Elm, Horsetail Extract, Optiphen (natural preservative), Rosemary, Lemon Grass, and Citric Acid
This deep conditioner is designed to rejuvenate and repair your hair. Additionally, this deep conditioner promotes hair growth as evidenced by the inclusion of fermented rice water, chebe, fenugreek, cassia, brahmi, amla, and rosemary. Also, hydrolyzed hemp protein adds a boost of strength to your hair. If your hair is sensitive to protein/strengthening ingredients, you may want to use this product 1-2x a month. If your hair craves protein/strengthening ingredients, you can likely use this deep conditioner more frequently. What distinguishes this product from many other strengthening products on the market is the inclusion of excellent butters like babassu butter and cupuacu butter. I've been storing my products in the fridge and when I scooped this out of the 8oz jar, it immediately reminded me of ice cream in terms of the texture and appearance of the product. Unlike many other strengthening conditioners, this one also provides tremendous moisture and slip through the use of slippery elm. The scent is earthy and does not linger after you rinse it out. With this 8oz jar, I anticipate that I will get at least 4+ uses out of it.
Do I recommend this deep conditioner? Yes. If I'd used this in 2020, it would have been in my recently-released favorites video.
Will I re-purchase this deep conditioner? Yes, yes and more yes. I'm pregnant (due in March) and I am craving ease as much as possible. I love that the ayurvedic ingredients I adore are already included in this pre-mixed product.
Ingredients: Distilled Water, Avocado Butter, Babassu Butter, Cupaucu Butter, Brassicyl Isoleucinate Esylate, Olive Oil, Nettle Oil, JoJoba Oil, Chebe, Marshmallow Root, Fenugreek, Hydrolized Wheat, Calendula Extract, Optiphen (natural preservative), Citric Acid, Sweet Orange oil
This moisturizing deep conditioner softens hair and combats frizz. This product includes star ingredients like chebe, fenugreek, sweet orange oil, avocado butter, babassu butter and cupuacu butter. The slip in this product is likely due to the incorporation of marshmallow root. The texture is almost identical to that of the Hit the Brakes Deep Conditioner. The ingredient list is also pretty similar except this deep conditioner does not have as many strengthening ayurvedic ingredients and includes a third butter in the form of avocado butter.
Do I recommend this deep conditioner? Yes.
Will I re-purchase this deep conditioner? Yes. I'm impressed by the ingredient list and my hair always craves moisture.
Ingredients: Distilled Water, Flaxseed, Avocado Butter, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Amla, Brahmi extract, Calendula extract, Rosemary Oil, Horsetail extract, Optiphen (natural preservative) , Citric Acid, Neem Oil, Sweet Orange Oil
So, I was already feeling ashamed of myself for not using the deep conditioners sooner rather than later. Then, OHE had to make a hair smoothie that has slip for days, no scent (which I love), and is highly concentrated such that I didn't even use a tenth of the 8oz jar. This hair smoothie glided through my hair with ease and gave my hair shine, softness and definition. This product also eliminates frizz. I love the incorporation of flaxseed, amla, brahmi, rosemary and sweet orange oil. It is rare to find amla and brahmi in stylers. This product worked extremely well for my curlformers set, and will undoubtedly work well for twist-outs, braid-outs and wash and gos. I suspect this will be a go-to product for me in the short-term as I plan to do lots of twist-outs before and after baby arrives. For a wash and go, since my hair is disrespectful, I would likely pair this with a gel for longevity.
Do I recommend this product? Yes.
Will I re-purchase this product? Yes. Again, I need ease.
Final Thoughts
If you are someone who likes to support black-owned brands with transparent ingredients that will strengthen, moisturize and grow your hair, you must try OHE. Currently, many of the products are on sale. So now is an excellent time to try products from the line. Some of you may be wondering, well are there any drawbacks to this brand? The only drawback would be that the shelf life is limited (anywhere between 3-9 months depending on the product). However this is not unusual for natural hair brands that utilize excellent ingredients. So, when you purchase this product, be prepared to have it in your regular rotation immediately and refrigerate it to preserve the shelf life. I am fully prepared to make that commitment in my quest for longer and stronger hair.
